Columbia, MD

The Young SchoolSM in Columbia, Maryland has been accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), one of only a few preschools in Maryland to receive the prestigious accreditation. The State accreditation is a voluntary process that encourages excellence in preschool programs, and gives parents assurance that the school has undertaken vigorous educational standards.

Always proactive about developing the best experience for young children, The Young SchoolSM decided to commit to the preschool accreditation program as a way to continually set higher standards for their school. The Maryland State Department of Education Accreditation Program measures many criteria, such as the staff credentials and training, the classroom size, the school curriculum, the school’s interaction with parents, the incorporation of technology into the classroom, and other factors.

“Our children are our greatest resource and we view the accreditation process as an important step to provide high quality early child care and education programs for young children in Maryland,” said Dr. Rolf Grafwallner, Assistant State Superintendent for the Division of Early Childhood Education. “We are pleased to recognize The Young SchoolSM for their voluntary decision to commit to the accreditation process, and to be successfully recognized as an accredited preschool.”

For over two decades, The Young SchoolSM has prepared young people for the future through an innovative preschool education program that is founded on high expectations and a belief that young children are competent and capable of extraordinary accomplishments. The school pioneered the Cottage learning environment which begins at infant and extends through Kindergarten. Children become part of a nurturing community where they are active participants and learners. The Young SchoolSM’s philosophy is influenced by two internationally acclaimed early childhood educational approaches, Reggio Emilia and Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE).

Since the first The Young SchoolSM opened in Howard County twenty years ago, three other The Young SchoolSMs have opened across Maryland, all with this innovative approach to early childhood education.

Several new locations are also in the planning stages. The newest location will be in Frederick, Maryland, and is scheduled to open in March 2009. The Young SchoolSM currently has locations in Howard, Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties.

“Preschool is a child’s first introduction to the classroom setting and we’ve always believed that the ‘joy of learning’ begins here. “We are very proud of our staff and our program that were recognized by the Department of Education for this accreditation,” said Josh Young, co-founder.

The Young SchoolSM is continuing the process of MSDE Accreditation at all locations. The Young SchoolSM has scheduled Open House tours to celebrate the accreditation award with the community. There are two Young SchoolSMs in Howard County – the first The Young SchoolSM opened on Red Branch Road and is now located on Tamer Drive in Kendall Ridge. The second Howard County location is located on Guilford Road in King’s Contrivance. Additionally, there are Young SchoolSMs in White Marsh and in Crofton. All locations offer programs for infants through age five.
