Celebrating 25 Years of Educating and Caring for Young Children.

The Young SchoolSM and the HCPSS Model Innovative Pre-Kindergarten Partnership

February, 2011

The Young SchoolSM in Kings Contrivance and the Howard County Public School System have partnered to offer high quality pre-kindergarten services to many children who would otherwise be ineligible or unable to receive them. The partnership will be formalized with an official signing at the Waterside Restaurant in the Sheraton Columbia Town Center Hotel on Monday, February 7.

Under the terms of the partnership, The Young SchoolSM will offer scholarships and discounts to up to 20 children whose family income is above the eligibility threshold for the public school pre-kindergarten program, but below 300% of the federal poverty level. Many of these families are among a large recent influx of Howard County residents with limited English proficiency. The partnership program was made possible by funding provided by the Judith P. Hoyer Early Child Care and Education Enhancement Grant for Preschool Services. Eligible participants may also take part in “wrap-around,” or extended day care, and will receive vision and hearing screening offered in coordination with the Howard County Health Department.

“We are honored to have entered this partnership with one of the best school systems in the nation,” said Karen Fambro, Head of School for The Young SchoolSM in Kings Contrivance. Director Jessica Patton adds, “This program will enhance our knowledge of education, build community connections, and create the greatest atmosphere for children possible.” At 9:00 a.m., JoAnn and Josh Young, Owners, and Karen Fambro, Head of School for The Young SchoolSM - Kings Contrivance will join Randi Albertsen, Grant Liaison, Innovations in Education, LLC; Ellen Flynn Giles, Howard County Board of Education Member; Marie DeAngelis, Director of Elementary Curricular Programs; and Lisa Davis, Coordinator of the Early Childhood Office to sign the formal partnership agreement.

For more than twenty years, The Young SchoolSM (www.youngschool.com) has been preparing young people for their future through an innovative preschool education program where children become active participants of a nurturing learning community. A unique physical environment provides exceptional opportunities for independent exploration and learning for young children.

The Howard County Public School System’s Partnerships Office (www.hcpss.org/aboutus/partnership) unites businesses and community organizations with schools to enhance the educational experience. Partnerships benefit schools, businesses, and the entire community by leveraging the resources of all participants. Partners may commit human or financial resources or other support.
