PACK THE BACKPACK CAMPAIGN

Dear Parents and Friends,

We would like to announce some exciting news. During the month of August, The Young School has partnered with ABC Channel 2 and the Preston Mitchum, Jr. Foundation for the “Pack the Backpack School Supply Drive”. www.pmjfoundation.org

The Young School has made community service projects a foundation of our program and have partnered with various organizations in our communities. Over the past 10 years, this program has provided disadvantaged and underserved children in the Baltimore area with school supplies and backpacks. As educators, we feel that it is very important for all children to be prepared for school in order to work to the best of their ability, and recognize that this begins with the right academic tools. Organizing community service projects is an important piece to our curriculum, as it provides us with the opportunity to teach children about giving and to inspire acts of kindness and positive change at a very early age. We are able to come together as children, families, teachers, and administrators to provide time, effort, and materials to those in our communities who need the extra help. For those in our program, we are also able to help instill a sense of place and belonging within the community. Our philosophy supports a life-long love of learning, and giving back to the community creates the foundation for our children to grow individually, as well as see oneself as part of a larger population.

In order to support this much needed cause, we have set up collection boxes in each lobby at all Young School locations. Attached is a suggested list of school supplies that are needed. We are asking that you please help us with this campaign by donating as many items as you can. The campaign begins today and ends on August 22nd. Please help us with promoting this drive by spreading the word to neighbors, friends, and co-workers. Last year, 1,800 backpacks filled with school supplies were provided to children in need through this Foundation. Please help by donating a backpack filled with a few supplies.

Throughout the month of August you will see this campaign promoted by ABC Channel 2. You may view an overview of this campaign at the ABC2 website: abc2news.com/schoolsupplies
