Create Stress-Free Mornings

Getting back into the rhythms and routines of a new school year after months of summer fun can be tough. Don’t worry, we’re here to help!

Maybe the mornings aren’t always as calm or collected as you’d like them to be. Sometimes it can feel like you’re always rushing to catch up after snoozed alarms and unexpected tantrums or skipping breakfast and missing socks. Sound familiar?

You’re not alone in your craving for a calm, smooth plan. Try these proactive tips that will set you and your family up for success with less chaos and more stress-free mornings.

Prepare the night before.

  • Lay out your child’s outfit. This includes socks, shoes, a backpack, a jacket, etc. If your child is old enough, discuss the importance of dressing independently and lay the clothes in an easily accessible area.
  • Put kids to bed on time. Doing so will ensure better sleep and increase the likelihood that they’ll wake up feeling rested and ready for a new day. Need advice on best practices? Explore our article on how to create healthy sleep habits.
  • Clean out backpacks daily. Remove school papers, soiled clothes, or toys that found their way in. Prepare it for the day ahead. Don’t forget to refill their water bottle!
  • Meal prep breakfast. Choose simple options. This is an excellent opportunity to involve your child too. Have your little assistant gather items, trim fruit, scoop ingredients, or sprinkle a garnish.
  • Reset the kitchen after dinner. Nothing is more stressful than waking up to a pile of dirty dishes in the sink and cluttered countertops. Take the time to clean up! It will be worth it when you wake up with more peace of mind.

Prioritize yourself.

Taking a moment for your mental health each morning can help you reset your mind, generate positive energy, and prepare you to tackle the morning rush with greater ease. Here are some simple ideas:

  • Mindful meditation
  • Move your body (ex: yoga, weightlifting, dancing, or jogging)
  • Journal about thoughts or gratitude
  • Listen to a daily podcast
  • Read a new book
  • Treat yourself to breakfast alone

Starting the day right.

  • Wake your child up with a favorite morning song, snuggle, or stuffed animal.
  • Be sure to communicate with your child about the next steps in your routine.
  • Turn on some calming music to help them prepare for the day.
  • If your child is older, have them set out your meal-prepped breakfast.
  • Prioritize spending five minutes during your child’s breakfast talking about the excitement of the day, positive affirmations, or three things your family is grateful for.
  • If time allows, clean up breakfast together.
  • Place backpacks and water bottles in a designated space for an easy, on-the-go grab!

As you start working toward calm mornings, try one or two things at a time until it all comes together. Not every morning will bring success but do your best to remain calm if things don’t go smoothly.

Change can be hard. Allow your family the time it needs to adjust, and you will see and feel a positive difference. See you at school!
